Tappara will relocate to the new Tampere Deck Arena for season 2021-22

THE BEST ARENA FOR ICE HOCKEY AND THE NEW HOME OF TAPPARA AND THE 2022 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

An atmospheric home arena and a stage for international championships. Finland has one of the best national ice hockey teams in the world, and Tampere has always been a pioneer in the sport. There’s no better place for one of the most sophisticated ice hockey arenas in the world! More than 13,000 spectators will be able to watch games at the new Tampere Deck Arena.

It will be home to the two Tampere teams, Tappara and Ilves, which will be able to enjoy the state-of-the-art facilities while their fans get absorbed in the game. The Arena will apply a ‘fans first’ concept. The fans will be involved in the planning phase, which will ensure that the stands will be as fan-friendly as possible and also the most modern in Europe. Both teams will play their home games at the new arena, starting from the 2021–22 season. At least 70 games of top level ice hockey will be played at the Arena every year. In addition to the main rink, the Arena will feature a modern practice rink and gym.

The first big international event is already scheduled to take place in 2022, when the Arena aims to host the IIHF World Championships.

History in brief

The hockey club Tappara originates from TBK, Tammerfors Bollklubb, which was founded in 1932. TBK was promoted to the top Finnish hockey level in 1942, and won three national championships until the club’s hockey section changed its name to Tappara in 1955.

From the 1955-56 season until today, Tappara has played at the highest level of hockey in Finland, with one exception: after finishing last, the team briefly visited the lower level in 1965-66. Tappara returned to the top league a year after it was relegated and has stayed there ever since.

Tappara has won 14 Finnish championships, with its predecessor TBK adding another 3 titles. The latest national championships for Tappara came in 2017 and 2016. The other championship years are 2003, 1988, 1987, 1986, 1984, 1982, 1979, 1977, 1975, 1964, 1961, 1959, and TBK’s 1955, 1954 and 1953.
